“Rihanna’s Diane Sawyer interview, part 1: Pain, shame, hard lessons”-AS QUOTED FROM EW.COM

By:Simon Vozick-Levinson

The first part of Rihanna’s vaunted interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer just aired on Good Morning America. It was only a five-minute clip — a teaser for the real interview that’s coming tomorrow night on 20/20 – but already the singer has said more than she did in the nine months following ex Chris Brown’s violent attack on her.

GMA cherrypicked some gripping excerpts for this interview trailer. The part that everyone will be talking about came when Rihanna acknowledged getting back together with Brown in the weeks after he assaulted her. “It’s pretty natural for that to be the first reaction,” she told Sawyer. “The moment the physical wounds go away, you want the memories to go away.” Love, she said, had blinded her at the time. Given how many victims of domestic violence do go back to their abusers, it’s important for the public to hear an explanation of that toxic thought process.

Rihanna told Sawyer that she eventually ended things with Brown after thinking about the example she was setting for fans in abusive relationships of their own. “When I realized that my selfish decision for love could result in some young girl getting killed, I could not be easy with that.” She said she became ashamed that she had ever been with someone who was capable of what Brown did to her: “I fell in love with that person. That’s embarassing.”

Intense stuff. In this clip, at least, Rihanna made an honest, powerful advocate for victims of domestic violence — tearing up at times, but determined to get her message out. Like I said yesterday, it’s not this 21-year-old musician’s responsibility to take up that role, but so far she’s doing an impressive job talking about issues that are all too often ignored or kept quiet for the very reasons she mentioned.

What did you think of Rihanna’s first GMA segment? Will you be watching again tomorrow?

I’m collecting things to tell you,

I’m creating things to say,

 I’m remembering expressions

that change my day to day…

I’m scrolling notes to make you smile,

tales to heal your heart,

words for making love to you

that turn it into art.

I’m writing down life’s ironies,

catching phrases with my teeth…

to turn you into poetrythat only I can read…

Going Gaga

At last night’s 13th Annual ACE Awards, the Accessories Council honored a fashion icon who’s made of plastic (Barbie) and a performer (Lady Gaga) who showed up in headwear that resembled an oversized cotton ball. Those trendsetting blondes were a couple of the more unconventional stars of an event devoted to recognizing the most influential forces in the world of handbags, hats, sunglasses, and—in the words of Accessory Visionary Award winner Diane von Furstenberg—other “friends you can carry with you and they make you feel better.”

Agyness Deyn took the stage in arresting feather eyelashes and Lucite bracelets to accept Burberry’s Brand of the Year award on behalf of Christopher Bailey. (“He’s in Asia, opening a new Burberry store,” she explained.) TOMS Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie waltzed in with Erin Wasson on his arm and a pair of exotic slip-ons on his feet. “They are absolutely, 100 percent fake zebra,” he assured us. Accepting the Humanitarian Award, Mycoskie struck the evening’s most sincere note: “Shoes, for 40 percent of the world, are not an accessory. They’re a necessity.”

Notably, both retail awards went to Web sites: Gilt Groupe and, the latter of which Betsey Johnson introduced by way of (what else?) a cheerleader routine. Tomas Maier‘s acceptance speech for Designer of the Year was over almost before it began, while Gaga used her time at the dais to thank Marc Jacobs, Hedi Slimane, Stephen Gan, David LaChapelle, Araki (“for photographing my soul, not my image”), and Nasir Mazhar, designer of the Orbit hat the pop star wore on Ellen and “which has now become an experience.” Gaga made a vow on behalf of her style team—”We will never do a line; we are not an economy”—and closed the proceedings with an unexpected fashion tip: “The most important fashion accessory is the condom.” Advice that doesn’t apply to Barbie, of course.
